Gulworthy Parish Council

Climate and Biodiversity Emergency

Gulworthy Parish Council became a signatory to the Devon Climate Declaration in autumn 2020.

We are aware of the significant implications of climate change for our community; that it is already having an impact; and if not addressed, the impact on future generations will be profound.

We understand that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has advised that carbon emissions must reduce globally by at least 45% by 2030 from 2010 levels and reach net-zero by 2050 if we are to avoid the worst effects of climate change by keeping warming below 1.5 degrees.

We will lead in the global response to climate change through our collective action, innovation and influence.

As a parish council we'll review our carbon footprint and emissions and report annually; and encourage those that work with us to do the same.

In collaboration with Gulworthy's residents, businesses and visitors we look forward to developing and implementing a plan to facilitate the reduction of Gulworthy's, and the South West's, carbon emissions.

This will require us to address both production and consumption emissions. We’ll openly report progress; and welcome offers to work with us.

We know this transformational change will be challenging.

Understanding our Parish Emissions

The Impact Tool has been developed to help parishes better understand their emissionsand indicate areas which could be considered to be priorities. The tool enables a parish to look at its Territorial Emissions and Consumption Emissions and these can be compared against other parishes.

A look at the Territorial Emissions for the parish of Gulworthy showed a 73.8t CO2e per household territorial footprint (p.a) with agriculture making up 42% of the total footprint. Co2e stands for 'carbon dioxide equivalent' and is a standard unit of measurement in carbon accounting. It expresses the impact of a number of different gases collectively as a common unit.

Please report healthy ash trees amongst patches of dieback for grafting and propagation

The Living Ash Project is identifying trees with a high degree of tolerance, collecting graftwood from them, and planting them out in a national archive on the public forest estate for further research.

There are millions of ash trees in our countryside and if you know of any ash trees, within a woodland setting, that look healthy but are surrounded by ash that are badly infected with ash dieback then The Living Ash Project wants to hear from you.
